Hello #Happy Slammers!
Can you believe it? The Aussie Summer of Tennis is already coming to an end. It wasn’t that long ago that we were saying #happy new year and preparing for the start of the new season. So we thought we would take look back at some of the memorable moments from the events leading up to the 2016 #Happy Slam.
The Aussie Summer of Tennis kicked off with the Hopman Cup over in Perth. The tournament is unlike any other and sees players play for their country in a round robin event. For the first time ever Australia had two teams (Teams are made up of one male and one female from each participating country). This gave Lleyton Hewitt one final chance for the crown. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Lleyton but it was for the other Aussie duo of Kyrigos and Gavrilova who walked away champions -This was the first Hopman Cup title for the Aussies since 1999.
Another bit of excitement for the tournament was the return of Vicky Duval. Vicky (who has been off fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma) returned to replace Serena Williams who was forced to withdraw due to inflammation on her knee. While team USA couldn’t go all the way, we certainly loved seeing Vicky back on the court.
We also had the APIA International in Sydney, The Hobart International and The World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide. These events drew a number of top players who worked hard to acclimatise to the Aussie Summer. Winners for these events included Victor Triocki who defended his 2015 title, Alize Cornet and Svetlana Kuznetsova,
But it wasn’t just the players getting attention from the media with Grigor Dimitrov’s newest fan Nicole Scherzinger drawing a few photographs at The Brisbane International. The final of the event was a replay of the 2015 final but this time it had a different ending with Milos Raonic defeating Roger Federer.
Of course there was also the Kooyong Classic (the location of the upcoming Davis Cup with the Aussie hosting the USA). You can read all about the fun we had at Kooyong here and you can check out our Facebook Page for all our pics from the event.
