Serena’s year: The round-up

Last week it was announced that Serena Williams’ year had come to an end as she withdrew from her final tournaments in Beijing and Singapore. Having become the quickest person to ever qualify since it became its eight-woman format in 2003, her absence at the WTA Finals will be missed. But let’s not be glum. Many #happy things have happened this year so shall we take a look and embrace them?

The first Grand Slam of the year and consequently her 19th of her career and 6th in Melbourne. She finished Maria off with an ace (winning 6-3, 7-6). A delayed reaction came as she confirmed she had actually won the match and then she jumped and jumped and jumped some more.
Do you remember? Even though she won in straight sets, Serena was suffering from a heavy cold and vomited (off-court) during a short rain delay towards the end of the first set.

Aside from the Aus Open, here are some other things Serena has achieved this year:

Miami Open,
French Open,
Wimbledon,
Western & Southern Open,
an extended record or becoming the only player to have won the Miami Open 8 times,
the ‘Serena Slam’ number 2,
oldest woman to win a Grand Slam in the Open era,
21 Grand Slam titles (one behind Steffi Graf’s all time record of 22)

A roaring applause and stream of cheers pulled Serena onto the court, drowning all the negativity as she made her return after a fourteen year boycott. She reached the semi-finals where she withdrew with a right knee injury.

“So you ready to go to the gym?”
“No I have to get my eyebrows done at 12 o’clock.”

The life of Serena. Multiple times she and Patrick Mouratoglou took to the live videoing. You can remind yourself of them here.

Serena was cover model for Vogue US’s April issue, speaking in the interview of how “I have done everything I wanted to do in tennis. There’s nothing missing, so all I have to do now is go out there and do what I do best.”
She also covered the New York Magazine (above images) in August, discussing aspirations, family, achievements and scarves.
