A throwback to the early stages of the US Open and Nike’s camouflage kit worn by Serena and Rafa. Happy Slammer Dinelka captured some of the action so shall we take a trip back and remind ourselves what happened?
Nadal VS Coric
On day one (31st August), Nadal’s round one match was against Borna Coric, the fiery teenager who’s spent his year rising up the rankings. With Rafatude and Passionfire, Nadal won the first two sets before dropping the third. “I got a little bit tired. I had some problems. I was sweating a lot. I didn’t feel strong enough,” he explained afterwards. He recovered in the fourth, however, hitting his racket on the net with gritted teeth as he concluded the match 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Williams VS Diatchenko
While Nadal and Coric concluded the day in the Arthur Ashe stadium, Serena Williams and Vitalia Diatchenko were the first of the night session. A bit over 10 minutes into the match and Serena was 5-0 up, Vitalia showing signs of injury with lack of movement and weary serves. Her left ankle injured, she retired when Serena was 6-0, 6-2 up.
Over on the practice courts…
Tuesday 1st September and training for Rafa becomes thirsty work.
